Raining and over cast skies start the morning Midtown. I am still waiting for Spring to officially arrive. Spring can arrive early to Midtown if it wants. Feel welcome Spring. It looks like the skies are getting clearer this morning, maybe.

We stopped in for dinner at Pho Saigon (Poplar and Tilman) last night. You can get great meals here and the prices are pretty low. The service in the past has always been spotty to say the least. Food and price very good, service poor. We have gone to the Pho Saigon restaurant for years. The waitress who has waited on us (to many times to count in the past) actually spoke to us last night. Wow. I am claiming she had an off day and decided to talk to us. I am not expecting her to speak to us again the next time we visit, but it was certainly a surprise.

Next up, the Academy Awards. Natalie and Colin were the expected winners. Trent Reznor won for the Social Network? Great. Maybe he will move on to only making music for movies. Please do. I am wondering if the film wasn’t as strong, would he have won. Again, new career for you Trent. Please move on to it.

Four earthquakes rocked Arkansas last night. I was watching the news and felt the house shake a bit. I looked down at my drink and it was moving as well. Time to break out the emergency vodka! Shake, rattle and roll Arkansas. Maybe the end really is near… for Arkansas. Read the story in the Commercial Appeal here. I talked to some of the wait staff about it at Republic Coffee this morning. Few felt or knew anything about the quakes.

Memphis Tigers took a beating from UTEP this weekend, 74-47. I did not watch the game but I did a double take when I saw the score. Holy cow. I’m pretty sure the team received a few choice words in the locker room. Spurs beat the Grizzlies 95-88. The Spurs are a tough team to beat. I should know, I had season tickets in Texas for many years. The Spurs bench is deep and the team can play all four quarters, while most NBA teams lose their legs in the 4th quarter. The only thing I do not like about the Spurs is that they are slow to warm up in a game. The Spurs also usually never take the game to the opposing team, only doing enough to win the game. Still the Spurs have an excellent season so far. Look for the Spurs to make it far in the play offs.

Speaking of the Grizzlies,  Groupon is offering a ticket and t-shirt for $19.00. 375 members have purchased tickets so far. Get your deal here at Groupon. I guess Groupon has heard my grumblings about all the deals for hair salons and has decided to offer guys something.

If you do not have gasbuddy.com app, get it. I filled my truck on Saturday, putting $5 more gas in than usual. The news only indicates a rise in oil prices, so get your bicycles ready Midtown. Gas Buddy also provides a map of prices and you can sort prices from lowest to highest or closest to your location.  My plans are to begin riding the Greenline to work starting in two weeks.

For all you 3 million people who have downloaded the Breakup App for Facebook, please go back to your regular stalking habits. Facebook has stopped allowing the app to work, for now. Take that as a sign that maybe you should stop stalking that special someone. I have been told by past girlfriends “I’ve been watching you”. Okay, that is really weird. You watched me go to the grocery store, go to the bank, go to work, get gas, ect. Is my life really that thrilling? I doubt it very much. Do yourself a favor and get over it. See the video here.

Lots to discuss today Midtown.

Last night I checked out the new bar ”The Dublin House”. Fair amount of people here on Saturday night. Because they are new and are awaiting the beer license, there were only two different kinds of beer offered. I was kind of disappointed by the lack of options for beer. Wednesday is the day the bar is supposed to get their beer on tap. The pool tables and music were also pretty good.

Woke up to overcast skies this morning Midtown. It looked as though it would pour rain at any second, but it didn’t. We stopped by the Bayou for brunch. Burger and beer to start the day. Rock on.

Next up was the movie “Black Swan”. I had four movie passes I received when I made a purchase from Just Pay Half Midsouth. You can’t get a better deal. A friend even purchased me a beer for giving her a movie pass. The movie was great. My prediction is that Black Swan will win Best Picture and a win for Natalie Portman for best actress. Colin Firth will win best actor. Best Director, Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan. Those are my picks Vegas. Take those predictions to the bank.

People love a good story and a happy ending (The Kings Speech). But people love ugly, villany, and insanity even more (Black Swan). I have never given Natalie Portman a lot of credit for acting. She was in Star Wars Episode One (NOT an Oscar winning performance). I do believe she gave all she had for ”Black Swan” and will be rewarded for her hard work.

I am surprised “Inception” is nominated for best picture. I loved the movie but it seems it was released so long ago. Unfortunately I doubt it will garner much attention (It could win Best Original Film Score and possibly Best Cinematography).

It must be a lazy day, I haven’t read any newspapers yet. I wonder what is going on in the rest of the world.

What excellent weather we are having in Midtown. A beautiful day in the neighborhood to say the least.

We stopped in for dinner at La Hacienda last night (Poplar and Highland) to meet a friend. I probably had mostly chips, my wife ate half a dinner and took home the other half.

My day started late this morning. I did find time to clean the house and clean my truck. Next stop: COFFEE.

On my way to the coffee shop I noticed the protestors at the corner of the Union and Cooper, with their signs, “STOP CVS”. I am all for protests, but ummm… it is a done deal. What I am really wondering is how many of those protestors will use the CVS pharmacy to pick up their prescriptions.

My usual table was taken at Republic Coffee. Hmmm… Worked on two cups of coffee while I plotted the rest of my day. My game plan? FREE Lenny’s sub for lunch (Facebook offer). Then over to the main library for the book sale today.

Lenny’s wasn’t that busy even at lunch time. Good. I ordered my free turkey sandwich (regularly would have cost $6 and change) to go. Thanks guys! As I ordered I wondered how many people used different email accounts to get free sandwiches. Then I started to wonder if someone could possibly use thirty email accounts to get thirty free sandwiches in one month. I am sure someone out there did. I should have tried it to see if it were possible. Next time. Not that I like Lenny’s so much, but hey, free is good.

Next up the library book sale. I find it humorous that the parking lot at the library is always full ONLY when there is a book sale. But it is a good book sale. Hard back books are $1.00 and paper back books are 5o cents. Grab box of books (an assortment of 12 hard back books) are $3.00. Great deal Midtown.

When I noted on Facebook I was at the book sale, a friend in Nashville messaged me that he had just raided a closing Borders books store. WIsh I had the opportunity.

Back home I enjoyed my free lunch.

From the weather reports yesterday you would imagine that Midtown was ready for the end of the world. It didn’t occur. That big storm that came thru Midtown didn’t last very long. Apparently the worst of it went north of Memphis. And I had my flashlight ready!

The weather in Midtown was a bit chilly this morning. The highs today will not get above 50. And I thought winter was gone.

I spent the evening last night downloading Contra Rebirth for the Wii. I spent $10 and it is 1991 all over again. Well maybe not. If memory serves me, I used to be able to get thru an entire Contra game in about 15 minutes. Twenty years later I can’t make it thru the first level. And my wife seems more impressed with my dishwashing skills than my Contra game skills. So much for the Wii time machine. Still Contra Rebirth is a fun game.

Republic Coffee featured some cool music this morning. I sat & discussed the storm or lack of a storm in Midtown with the wait staff.

A downtown cupcake shop business is already sidelined as Amanda King, the co-owner, has been asked to change the proposed name of the business “Red Velvet”. Let the cupcake wars begin. I never really got the whole cup cake thing. I have tried a couple of different cupcakes here in town made by various shops, but would not go out of my way for any of them. I did read an article in the NY Times newspaper about this type of business. Read more about the Memphis cupcake war here in the Commercial Appeal.  

Hey guys, want to have some fun in Memphis? Check out the deal at Groupon today. Paintball! If you haven’t tried paintball out, you need to check it out in Lakeland. Word to the wise though – Guys – WEAR… A… CUP! Really. Paintball will leave a mark, anywhere it hits you. If you want to avoid a pain worse than death itself, get yourself some protection if you decide to play. Just sayin’ from experience.

And Memphis is being scouted for a Martin Luther King Jr. movie. Cool. Read about it in the Commercial Appeal here. The School Book Depository in Dallas tripled it’s attendance after the film JFK came out (I’ve been there. Check it out if you are ever in Dallas).  Hopefully the same will hold true for the National Civil Rights Museum. Action!

BBQ will be on the grill tomorrow! The wife picked up some steak, burgers and sausage. Let the grilling begin!  

The MSC’s Consolidation Forum for Wednesday had 22 people in attendance. Wow. All the hub bub and only 22 people show up. Hmmm… Trust Marketing spent $14, 500 to promote it and 22 people show up? Unknown local bands get more people to show up late at night than this.

Its Friday, get ready for the weekend Midtown!

What a storm last night Midtown. Driving to work, there were many branches on the ground this morning. More bad weather is scheduled for today. Be safe Midtown. Check the latest weather here from weather.com.

I noticed on the news last night that Memphis City Schools are promoting six days of school and only three weeks of summer vacation. Adding more days to the school week may not be the answer. I would rather see the kids attend after school programs. The biggest issue for MCS is that the system is broken. Consolidation may not the be answer. Radical change of school oversight will probably be the only way to change the system. And the bike lane issue on Madison is back in the news. The Memphis Flyer offers an article regarding the issue. I am for bike lanes in the Cooper Young area. How many people do you see riding bikes or jogging down Madison? Very few. Check out Central or Cooper any given day and many people are running or biking. Try the Cooper Young area first Memphis, then we will talk about Madison bike lanes.

Speaking of bikes, I am getting my bike ready to ride when the pump price starts to rise. Gasbuddy.com offers a look at local gas prices in the city. Just looking gas buddy over last night, I noticed sales prices vary by as much as .10 per gallon. Try gas buddy out! 

ABC 24 offers a look at discount websites. Some I use and have heard of, others I have not. Scout Mob seems to be interesting. It is available in Nashville but not Memphis. Hopefully soon.

Cloudy with light rain today in Midtown. Where is Spring? I thought it was here already.

My usual table at Republic Coffee was taken this morning. No bueno. Republic Coffee is advertising for wait staff. Monday – Friday morning till noon, as well as Saturday and Sunday. Check out Republic Coffee’s Facebook page for more information.

Interesting day yesterday. Worst day of 2011 at the office so far. I received a call from a crazy person. I even made a notation on her folder last year that the person calling was crazy and not to speak to her. Note to self, read your own notes. Guess what, you can’t argue with crazy. Crazy-”I didn’t receive the paperwork”. Me-”The paperwork is  signed that you  received it. I have a copy here”. Crazy – “Well I don’t have it”. Me-”Yes you do.” Crazy- “Maybe I ATE the paperwork!” Hmmm… yes… you ATE the paperwork. This is where I want off the crazy train. “Conductor? Yes, this is my stop. Please let me out”. She later called back and left a message. She FOUND the paperwork! Really! What a surprise! Let’s see, I told you over and over you had received the paperwork. Again, no argue with crazy. Waste of time and energy. Machete don’t argue.

It looks like the Union Avenue United Methodist Church in Midtown is getting ready to be torn down. Workers are prepping the church to be cleared from the land. My take on the situation is business is far more concerned with sales and the bottom line to understand how architecture makes an impact on a community. It is what stands out and what is different that gives a building and the community character, not the color beige and a square box of a building. Lennys Subs is offering free chips and a drink if you purchase a sub today. It is advertised on Lennys Facebook page.

Groupon deal today is $6 for $12 Worth of Fresh Mexican Cuisine at Qdoba Mexican Grill. I have never heard of this restaurant. The locations listed for the restaurant are Southaven and Cordova. Over 800 deals have been purchased. It may be a good deal if you purchase 2 coupons. Cue the Mariachi music. Machete likes Mexican food.

Living Social features a deal for tans. Read more about it here. Not saying much about it since it is in Arlington and I don’t tan. Machete don’t tan.

The real deal is the Patrick’s Restaurant $10 for $20 deal at Just Pay Half Midsouth. And Patrick’s features Trivia Night on Wednesday evenings. Cool. I may have to stop in for that. Machete knows trivia.

Beautiful weather this morning Midtown. Get outside and enjoy it.

I’m calling Tuesday at Republic Coffee “Let’s Make A Deal Tuesday”. Lots of people meeting, talking about deals. Seems to be a lot of business going on this morning.

Someone needs to tell the programmers of television at the networks they need to work on Monday night programming. Hawaii Five O? Boring. Nothing on television at all on Monday nights. Boring.

New running shoes = my break is over. It was good while it lasted. “Why haven’t you been running?” “Oh, I need new running shoes”.

Loeb Properties will host a public meeting outlining the plans for Overton Square on March 1st. Let us pray for the best. Read the short article in the Commercial Appeal.  

The Memphis Daily News reported that interest in business is ramping up for the Broad Street area. A microbrewery is a possibility? Sign me up! For those of you who attended the “A new face for an Old Broad” event several months ago, this is good news. Business owners say sales are up since the event. I wish the organizers would have the same event again. This is a great idea. Read the article here and support Broad St.  

The end really is near, well at least for Arkansas. Several earthquakes were reported in North Central Arkansas lately. Prepare for Armageddon! Or something like that. Read about it in the Memphis Daily News here. If you survive the earthquakes, here are a few deals:

Cloudy weather this morning Midtown, but it could be worse.

Monday started good. I was pulling out of the driveway, and usually it is a battle to get on E. Parkway S. in the morning. A woman in an SUV backed up and let me out onto the street. Thank you Ms. SUV driver! I then slipped into Republic Coffee this morning for some coffee. It must be Spring since all of the staff were wearing shorts. The other thing I noticed was how the morning atmosphere was a feeling of a new day morning vibe, and when I stop by in the evening, the vibe is totally different. I believe I enjoy the morning vibe better.

The Commercial Appeal has a good article for small businesses and online presence. I see and hear daily how small businesses complain about lack of sales, yet they do nothing to promote their business with cheap and easy tools. Get a website for as little as $100. Make sure you are using social media. This is FREE ADVERTISING!  Four Square is a good one. Those that are not using these social media tools are missing the boat. Offer discounts for those customers who check in with your business. Customers do not know you are there unless you promote yourself. Reach out to your potential customers. The best quote from the article is “You don’t have to win the online race to be successful, but have to show up and compete”. Great advise.

Also featured in the Commercial Appeal is the story of the 72 year old Jon Simpson who has run at least one mile every day for the last 39 years. Wow! He is 72! What is your excuse for not running? Keep going Mr. Simpson! He should have his own battery commercial.

Fox News reports that an Egyptian couple has named their child “Facebook” in honor of the company who helped the Egyptian revolution. Hopefully she can give herself a nickname when she gets older, like “Nintendo”, which sounds cooler. “Hey Facebook, how you doing?”  “Lets go have pizza Facebook”. Read the story here.

The Groupon Deal today $100 of wine for $40.00. Wine isn’t a favorite for me, but it could be a deal for you.

Living Social has a good deal today, $5 for $10 of Sweet Cece’s yogurt.  4615 Poplar Avenue is the location (Poplar and Perkins Exted). 450 sold already and it is still morning. I wonder if this deal will hit 1000 today? I have never tried this shop out, but at $5, I should check it out.

I ended Saturday with a two mile walk on the Memphis Greenline. People were still out and about on the Greenline late in the day.

Next up Republic Coffee with my wife. I ordered tea for a change. The weather was so nice we sat on the patio.

Later in the evening I downloaded the movie “The Social Network“. I read the book and didn’t really like the book. (Usually most people like the book more than the movie). I haven’t watched the movie yet, we will see how it is.

The other movie I did watch last night was “Valkyrie“. Wow, a good movie. I am a history buff, so I enjoyed it. Having been to Berlin Germany, I really got into the movie. If you haven’t watched it, check it out.

Ah, remember the story in the Commercial Appeal about bike lanes on Madison a few days ago? While I was working the grill yesterday, I heard people arguing. Looking up, I watched as a cyclist and a taxi driver were arguing over who had the right of way on the street (Central and E. Parkway South, in front of Christian Brothers Univ). If that doesn’t say it all. I will give the cyclist credit, he kept up with the cab and arguing at the same time. Never a dull day in Midtown.

I am currently reading the book MetaGame by Sam Landstrom. A very good book. The reviews for this book are great. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

What is on todays agenda? I am having lunch with someone and discussing home brewing. Even though I no longer make my own beer, I am more than happy to give others tips and resources about the process. If you can boil water, you can make beer. Well, there are a few more steps involved, but over all it is pretty easy.

The weather is the best. Get outside Midtown and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Not feeling it today. My groove is off. Started out late at Republic Coffee. My usual table was taken. Hmmm… The place was crowded this morning. Read the paper and drank my iced coffee.

Next stop was Target for meat and vegetables for the grill. Remember a few weeks ago I spotted the AC/DC drinking glasses at Target? They are on sale now for $15.00. Interesting.

Do you want a one way ticket to hell? The Vatican issued a press release urging people to NOT buy tickets to the beatification of Pope John Paul II. The Vatican said no tickets were required for the ceremonies. Speaking of Midtown bars, the Dublin House has opened recently. I may have to stop in for a look. It is located near the Blue Monkey at 2012 Madison Ave. I wonder if anyone has taken into account the address 2012. Read the early reviews of the place here at yelp.
