The sky looks wonderful and the temperature is not so bad, but cold is set to hit midtown in a couple of days. Get out the big coats again.

Stopped for iced coffee at Republic Coffee this morning before work. Did I need it ever so badly.

Christian Brothers University has an exhibit of 358 religious relics on display. The relics are part of the De La Salle Archives. If you cannot get to Rome and Vatican City, here is your chance to see a small collection up close, without going shoulder to shoulder with thousands of tourists. This is a great opportunity Midtown, and it should be an interesting exhibit. Don’t miss it!  Hours: 7:45 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday; 1-11 p.m. Sunday. Closed Saturday. Memphis Daily News features Black Lodge Video in the 1/31/2011 edition. I’ve been to Black Lodge for videos in the past. It may not be for everyone, but they do have a great selection of “interesting” films. If you have not been by, stop in. I love the part of the article about Blockbuster Video. Last night ended with a trip to Camy’s. We received a $20 for $10 deal at Groupon. For our coupon we received two lasagna dinners with salad and bread sticks. We split each lasagna dinner and ended up saving one dinner for lunch. A great deal, thanks Groupon and Camy’s!

I started today with meat on the bbq grill. Chicken, sausage, burgers, and steak all smoked on the grill. Everything turned out great, even though the weather was not what it was yesterday.

Spotted these drinking glasses at Target today on sale for $20.00. Now I know why Angus Young has 1/2 BILLION dollars in the bank. I may have to sneak back to the store and buy them. I have been to many AC/DC shows, although I have never worked any of them. I even lost my hearing at one show in high school. I couldn’t hear out of one ear for one month. For those about to rock….

Cards were played at Republic Coffee, while drinking an iced coffee.

The evening ended with a trip to La Hacienda. Chips, salsa, drinks and mexican food. What a great way to end the day.

The weather in midtown is excellent today.

Central BBQ is right around the corner. I may have to stop by for some lunch.

Justpayhalfmidsouth.com has a $8 for $16 coupon at Republic Coffee. Sweet! I purchased two. As a bonus there are two movie passes thrown in to boot. You can’t get a better deal. Just Pay Half has doesn’t seem to be big… yet. I do believe there is a chance it can grow in the future. Easy to use website as well.

I may stop by Republic Coffee for some iced coffee after some bbq later today.

We stopped by La Hacienda Mexican restaurant last night. If you wonder where it is located, it is next to Busters at Poplar and Highland (3491 Poplar Ave.). Chips, margaritas and good mexican food is a staple here. There are a lot of good reviews online, but I cannot seem to find an official website.

It appears we will be checking out ”Kings Speech” later this after noon. That should be interesting.

If the weather holds the same for tomorrow, the green line is an option for a nice walk.

Beautiful weather today in Midtown. I’m loving it. And its Friday to top it off. Sweet   Hopefully I can barbeque tomorrow. Just the thought of smoked burgers, chicken, sausage… mmmm….

I painted a new series of small oils last night. It was the first time I used oil. I have always thought I would love it, but it was a bit to thick for my skill level. Something else for me to work on in the future. See a sample of one of the three paintings at the bottom.

For you business owners, there is an interesting article in USA Today about building your business with the customers you already have.

I stopped in at Republic Coffee this morning for iced coffee. A great way to start the day.

Michael Oher will be signing his new book, “I Beat the Odds” at Davis-Kidd bookstore on February 16th. My bet is that there will be a line a mile long at the book signing.  Get in line early Memphis. You can read the full article from the Memphis Daily News here.

Where’s the beef? Taco Bell is sued for claims the taco’s contain only have 35% beef. Taco Bell fights back by stating the tacos have 88% beef. Why is anyone eating at Taco Bell anyway? The tacos taste TERRIBLE. The beef is in South Texas people, not at Taco Bell. Have a REAL taco at a tex-mex restaurant. The lawsuit should be based on the taste of the taco, not the amount of beef in it. I made the mistake of getting a Taco Bell burrito 2 years ago as a late night snack. NEVER AGAIN! There is a reason the food is so cheap.

Want some good food in Midtown? Try Soul Fish Cafe at 862 South Cooper. We went there for dinner last night. The half chicken was good as well as the mashed potatoes. Yum. When we arrived at 5:30 there were only a few people sitting down for dinner. When we finished our meal at 6:00 p.m., every table was taken. That says a lot for a diner. I watched “The Office” and “30 Rock” last night. They never fail to deliver. Great shows. “Archer” is also a laugh out loud t.v. show. I have to set the DVR to record it.

The sun is out and shining on Midtown. Good morning to ya!

Got a Kindle?  E-Survey:  About half of the 35 U.S. publishers in a survey predict that e-books will become the dominant form over print by 2014. (E-books made up about 10% of the book market in 2010.). Why? As a Kindle owner, it only takes less than 30 seconds for me to purchase a book (for usually $9.99 or less). For the most part I have enjoyed almost every e-book I have downloaded. If I can get a used book for less money and effort, I will do so. But until that time, I will stick to Kindle.

And speaking of apps, if you are having a hard time sleeping as I usually do, there is an app for that as well. The White Noise app and Pzizz  Sleep app are well recommended. Go tothe full article in the NY Times Tech section. I haven’t tried either, but may look into it. Check out the user comments at the end of the article. They look promising.

I watched the show Face Off on the Syfy network last night. Not that I was expecting much from it. The promo videos didn’t interest me much. The show  was much better than I expected. Although I am not sure why I enjoyed it so much, I will be back for more. You can check out the review for the show here.

The mystery of the piano on the sand bar has been solved. A teen has admitted to placing the piano on the sand bar in South Florida. Crazy kids. 

Where is the best city to retire? Memphis, TN is ranked #2 by Forbes. Read the whole article at Memphis Daily News. After getting the short end of most lists, this is a suprise for Memphis.

So another night of snow in Midtown. At least the roads are clear and the sun is out. I am glad for that.

Huey Lewis and the News are playing Jan. 27 2011 at Minglewood Hall. Buy tickets here. 

Director of Police Larry Godwin is retiring in April. We will see what his replacement brings to Memphis. 

What are you hungry for Midtown? How about Central barbeque! It is always good, and nearby. Get there early, by 5:30 there is usually a line out of the door. We usually stop by a few times a month. And be on the look out for their specials. Yum!

Midtown Memphis is suffering with cold and rain. How can one expect to barbeque with this weather.

No visit to the gym this morning. I am not feeling up to it.

Speaking of exercise, Biggest Loser is on television tonight. And speaking of television, there was practically nothing on television worth to watch last night. 500 plus channels and nothing to watch. Great. A game of cards was more interesting than television.

So the Top Ten Tuesday list: Top ten albums to take to a desert island. Remember those things called “albums”, when you listened to side “A” then side “B”?

10. Metallica – Ride the Lightning. I listened to this in its entirety on a road trip last month. GREAT album.

9. Iron Maiden- Killers. All rock, no stock. Just a great album start to finish.

8. Motorhead – No Sleep At All. The “other” live album. Some think its better than “No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith”.

7. Scorpions – Rock You Like a Hurricane. Blackout is a close second.

6. Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon. “The Wall” is alright as well

5. Black Sabbath – Heaven and Hell. Sing it R.J. Dio!

4. Rush – Moving Pictures. 2 words – KICK ASS!

3. Judas Priest – Screaming for Vengeance

1. The Doors – The Doors. From 1967 it is a classic. Very hard to beat this album.

Mens Health published an article  about the best and worst restaurants to dine at. Best Mexican food chain – Chipotle. I liked it when I could get it. Worst Mexican food chain – On the Border. Yeah, I pretty much agree with that. The article goes on about best Chinese restaurants – Panda Express. Really? Worst - P.F. Changs. Wow. I didn’t see that coming.

Three days of the hitting the gym in a row. Go me. At 6:30 a.m. the parking lot to the gym was full. I was surprised. An hour later the parking lot was near empty.

Grey and overcast skies. Midtown needs sunshine!

Gym, British Televison Advertising Awards, Republic Coffee, & The Box

My second day this year at the gym.  At 12:15 very few people were at the gym. At 12:30 everyone was at the gym. 

Next up Republic Coffee. Iced coffee with a side of bacon. You can’t go wrong with that. I sit next to this partition most of the time. For some reason I am transfixed by it.

The Brooks Museum offered the British Television Advertising Awards in the afternoon. The event was sold out and ran 2 hours 15 minutes. Good entertainment for $8.00. My only complaint was the warm temperature in the theater. Some of the most memorable commercials were the ones dealing with social issues. Rape, drug use, and abuse all made an appearance. What really struck a reaction with the audience was a McDonalds commercial about adding nothing else to the meat they serve. The commercial was going on and on and about nothing added, then at the end you see the McDonalds logo. The audience, including myself gasped. My guess is that most people in the audience didn’t eat at McDonalds, myself included. Overall it was a good look at another culture via their advertising commercials.  

 

 

The evening ended with the movie The Box. Talk about being all over the road. I am not sure even the actors knew what was going on with the plot. I haven’t asked “what is going on” so much in one film in a very long time. After looking up the film online I still couldn’t understand what had occurred. It seemed to be a very bad impersonation of the film “Donnie Darko”.

I finally got to the gym today. EVERY SINGLE PARKING SPACE WAS TAKEN. At least I worked out.

Afterwards, I went to Republic Coffee to read the paper.

Next up, barbeque on the front porch. Hamburgers, chicken, sausage and steak.

I found out last night that the Evergreen Theater featured Monty Pythons Holy Grail. Wished I had known about it earlier. I would have made plans to go.
